Transitions across boundaries may be given special significance by requiring a special position or process through which transition is achieved.

Physical Some of the doors in a building play a special role in creating transitions and maintaining privacy. Whilst a high doorway may be simple and convenient, a lower door is often more profound. The act of going through it is a deliberate thoughtful passage from one space to another.
